Anais Fournier died at the age of fourteen. She drank two cans of Monster energy over a period of two days. The caffeine aggravated an underlying heart condition, which led to her death. The FDA does not regulate caffeine levels in these beverages.

On November 16, 2012, the FDA published a supplement to their post regarding adverse events due to energy drinks, “Energy “Drinks” and Supplements: Investigations of Adverse Event Reports.” The FDA is continuing to investigate reports of illness, injury or death of people who took products marketed as “energy drinks” or “energy shots.”
